Aspiring to be “Nihon-ichi shoyu”

Oka Naosaburo is known for its trademarked product ‘Nihon-ichi-shoyu’, meaning the No.1 soy sauce in Japan. The name embodies the philosophy, passed down from generation to generation of brewers, that “our aim is to be a soy sauce brewery worthy of being called the best in Japan.” They put this philosophy into action through “sanpo-yoshi” or “three-way benefits,” a traditional Japanese business theory that states that every transaction should not only be “good for the seller” and “good for the buyer” but also “good for the community.”

Renovating the traditional brewery: For long life and cleanliness

While keeping up traditions such as brewing soy sauce in kioke (wooden barrels), the brewery is also moving forward, renovating and evolving with resolve and stability. Repeated renovations from 2012 onward ensure safe and reliable soy sauce production, culminating in the acquisition of FSSC22000 certification in 2022, while the repair of 20 damaged kioke ensures that the traditional way of making soy sauce is carried over to the future.

Providing opportunities for interaction between brewery and community

Oka Naosaburo welcomes brewery tours at any time except during the year-end and New Year holidays. They have chosen to focus on building relationships with people by offering diverse activities such as the ‘My Own Soy Sauce’ workshop, where participants can experience making soy sauce. Additionally, they provide soy sauce-based cuisine at a restaurant called Tenchu in Machida, Tokyo.
